Dramatic Hannover Steal Freiburg's Spotlight #SCFH96

1:09 PM By

Lineups:

Freiburg: Bürki, Günter, Kempf, Krmas, Riether, Klaus, Darida, Schuster, Schmid, Frantz, Mehmedi

Hannover 96: Zieler, Sakai, Marcelo, Sané, Albornoz, Schmiedebach, Hirsch, Briand, Stindl, Kiyotake, Joselu

Midfield Synergy
Hannover’s proactive approach implemented from the midfield kickstarted their attack. Schmiedebach pushed out to the far right side of the pitch with the support of Lars Stindl and Jimmy Briand. Briand had a positive display contributing in the final third, which was facilitated by linking up with Stindl. He would thread the ball down the line and get involved in creating chances. It shows how Briand has gotten used to the pace of the Bundesliga.

Use of Efficiency
It took a little longer for Freiburg to settle in. Around 20 minutes in, Freiburg started to look more lively. Initially, Freiburg were nervous because Hannover wanted to retain possession and use quick passing to their advantage. However, the likes of Günter, Darida, and Schmid fueled Freiburg into efficiently converting their chances. Things were looking brighter for the home side during the hour mark. They played more confidently and had much closer attempts. On the other hand, Hannover became more predictable in the second half despite being the better side in the first half.

High-Flying Hannover
H96 pushed through being two goals down. The introduction of Leo Bittencourt was a game-changer. It put The Reds on course to grab a point as late drama unfolded. A clever pass from Captain Stindl in the box was finished off by Bittencourt in the 83rd minute and a poor clearance from Roman Burki welcomed a Joselu equalizer in the 93rd minute.

“What a game today! We fought to the last minute and got our reward!” - Lars Stindl

Match Review: PSG vs. Ajax (UCL Group Stage)

Lineups:

PSG: Sirigu, van der Wiel, Marquinhos, David Luiz, Maxwell, Pastore, Rabiot, Matuidi, Cavani, Ibrahimović, Lavezzi

Subs Used: Lucas Moura (68'), Chantôme (75'), Digne (86')

Ajax: Cillessen, Van Rhijn, Van der Hoorn, Denswil, Boilesen, Klaassen, Serero, Andersen, Schöne, Milik, Kishna

Subs Used: Viergever (10'), Zimling (69')

Analysis:

Ajax were keen to put numbers forward and committed to pressing in PSG’s half. For a majority of the match, they were comfortable with possession and played an attack-minded set up. Ajax’s strengths were in controlling the game, yet remaining patient and composed. However, playing a high line was a weakness. This put them at a greater risk of being caught out of position.

PSG played long balls overhead Ajax players to escape Ajax’s pressing and simultaneously exploited their high line. Also, they used Ajax’s loss of possession to their advantage because it wasn’t easy disturbing Ajax’s rhythm through the midfield. PSG are very strong at linking up and showcasing their finishing ability. Both goals by Ibra and Cavani were an indication of this. For the first goal, Ibra chipped the ball to Lavezzi who checked Cavani’s run, which resulted in a goal. For PSG’s second goal, a giveaway to Lucas, simple pass to Pastore, and a cross in the box to Ibra gave PSG the lead.

Pastore’s contribution to Ibra’s goal showed how crucial he was going forward and creating chances. His distribution of passes to both Ibra and Lavezzi helped in situations where Ajax lost the ball. Another important player was Rabiot. His awareness on and off the ball brought balance to the game. He had the most ball recoveries (14), completed all of his tackles (4), made 4 interceptions, while maintaining 92% pass accuracy. Plus, he would drop deep in between David Luiz and Marquinhos to help build the play.

The understanding between PSG’s central defensive pairing didn’t garner the same attention as the attack, but they were just as involved in the win. David Luiz and Marquinhos brought the best out of each other. This complementary partnership produced a solid performance in defense. When PSG would distribute the ball from the back, there was the risk that Ajax would use this opportunity to apply pressure. However, they were able to respond to the danger by quickly shutting down Ajax. Between the two of them, David Luiz and Marquinhos had 9 interceptions, 2 blocks, and 7 clearances.

Although the score wasn’t in Ajax’s favor, they continue winning hearts with their playing style, talent, and sheer determination. One player who embodies all these attributes is Ricardo Kishna. He’s only 19 years old, but came out fearless on the pitch. He caused problems for PSG on the left and gave Ajax more options out wide. One instance was his super cross to Klaassen in the box who ended up leveling the score with his diving header. Indeed, Kishna has a bright future ahead of him.

#TURvBRA Friendly: Preview on Brazil

Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2014
Location: Istanbul, Turkey
Stadium: Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium

Since Dunga’s second time in charge of the Seleção, things have been looking bright for Brazil. Having clean sheets in all of their last four friendlies, Brazil are well prepared to face Turkey for the sixth time.

Turkey resulted in two draws and three losses from their five matches against Brazil. This will be a difficult match for Turkey due to their recent inconsistencies.

Brazil’s squad
Dunga has made significant changes to this Brazilian side after replacing previous coach, Felipe Scolari. It’s good to note that his squad is now mainly made up of European based players.

Currently, there is a total of six uncapped players on Dunga’s roster – Neto, Firmino, Fred, Douglas Costa, Luiz Adriano, and Talisca.

Lucas Moura and Romulo are two players that will be absent during Wednesday’s game. Benfica player Anderson Talisca will be set to replace Moura, while Shakhtar’s Fred will take Romulo’s spot.

Thoughts
Brazil will have no problems facing Turkey. There is no question whether Neymar will be placed up top – he will. What I look forward to the most is their midfield. The amount of depth their midfielders have makes you wonder who Dunga will include in his starting XI. I predict Oscar in the center, Willian and Coutinho on the wings, and Casemiro and Luis Gustavo playing in defensive midfield. The backline will be secured with the likes of Felipe Luis, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, and Danilo.

I would like to see Dunga include some new faces through the duration of this friendly. After having a successful season with Hoffenheim last year, Roberto Firmino is one man that most people are excited to see. Luiz Adriano is also another name to look out for. He has been a tremendous help to Shakhtar – being the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

ROSTER

Goalkeepers
Diego Alves (Valencia)
Rafael Cabral (Napoli)
Neto (Fiorentina) - Uncapped

Defenders
Marquinhos (PSG)
Thiago Silva (PSG)
Miranda (Atletico Madrid)
Filipe Luis (Chelsea)

Alex Sandro (Porto)
Danilo (Porto)
Mario Fernandes (CSKA)

Romulo (Spartak Moscow) – Out due to Injury**
Fernandinho (Manchester City)
Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg)
Casemiro (Real Madrid)
Roberto Firmino (Hoffenheim) – Uncapped
Oscar (Chelsea)
Willian (Chelsea)
Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)

Forwards

#TURvBRA Friendly: Preview on Turkey

Turkey will play a friendly game against Brazil in İstanbul on November 12. The last time these two sides met was in 2007. Turkey have not won against Brazil in a total of 6 meetings, so the stage is set for a very electric atmosphere at Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium.

If Turkey play to their strengths, they could grind out a positive result. By utilizing the flanks, Turkey can take the advantage of the fullbacks’ overlapping runs to link up with players on the wing. This allows them to cross the ball in dangerous areas. Brazil will be looking to retain the ball and take control of the game, so Turkey may be restricted from their pass-oriented approach. However, a focused performance in midfield can disturb Brazil’s rhythm and bring back possession in Turkey’s favor. Individual moments of brilliance will be key against a motivated Brazilian side. With the good, comes the bad. There are certain weaknesses Turkey will have to keep in mind. Although they tend to start off strong, they have trouble keeping up the intensity for 90 minutes. This impacts their ability to capitalize on chances. They may get very limited goal-scoring opportunities, so the attack has to fully concentrate on execution in the build-up. Also, Turkey will have to make the most of their set piece situations. Another issue is the defensive lapses. The team is most vulnerable when losing possession. This can pose a problem against the quick interchange of Brazil’s players. Whether Turkey win or lose, this is a good moment to see where the team stands against a formidable opponent. As the underdog, Turkey will enter the arena with the support of the home crowd. Pride is always on the line in football. Projected Lineup: Volkan Demirel, Caner Erkin, Bekir İrtegün, Semih Kaya, Gökhan Gönül, Mehmet Topal, Selçuk İnan, Gökhan Töre, Olcay Şahan, Arda Turan, Burak Yılmaz

FIFA's Ethics Committee Dilemma

FIFA was under investigation after accusations of corruption were brought up in the selection process of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids. Michael Garcia is the lead investigator in charge of this case. A 350 page report was issued by FIFA’s Ethics Committee in September which brought some insight into this investigation.

FIFA’s chief adjudicator, Hans-Joachim Eckert, announced that the report will not be published in it’s entirety. Due to legal reasons, an overview of this report will only be released in November. It is worth noting that Garcia and several other FIFA executive members urged this report should be available in full.

“Publishing the report in full would actually put the FIFA Ethics Committee and FIFA itself in a very difficult situation legally. What is more, we have to respect the personal rights of the people mentioned in the report, which in the case of full publication of the report would in all likelihood not be possible.” -Hans-Joachim Eckert (FIFA.com)

It is understandable that publishing the full report would cause problems. Legal issues can arise since individuals involved in this case would want his or her name left in confidentiality. It is the Ethics Committee’s duty to protect those who want to remain undisclosed, especially if a number of these people hold an important roles in the organization. Revealing the names of witnesses could be detrimental to his or her reputation.

Many people are pushing for transparency. Open communication is something FIFA does not excel in. This organization is constantly subjected towards corruption allegations. Bribery is a common topic brought up when dealing with corruption charges, such as the investigation associated with World Cup bids. Transparency removes barriers that can distort the perception of an organization. Once FIFA eliminates hidden agendas and practice greater ethical standards, it will then improve the identity of this organization.

The Takeaway: Turkey's Test Against Czech Republic and Latvia

Turkey have all the tools to play eye-to-eye against any opponent. Although the EURO 2016 campaign has been less than ideal, it is a test of the players’ resolve. Against both Czech Republic and Latvia they showcased their strengths and weaknesses. Here are the takeaways:

1. Starting off strong
Turkey dictated the tempo of the match through their work on the ball. They held onto a majority of possession and looked to maintain fluidity. They were keen to build from the back and use players in the heart of midfield to pick out those stationed out wide. This would create overlapping runs on the flanks. Turkey’s proactive approach was their strength in supplying numbers into the box. Not only did this cause problems for the opposition’s defense, but it also forced them to play deep. Turkey moving the ball as much as possible out of their own half took pressure off their back line as well.

2. Arda Turan the main attraction
Arda’s work ethic is admirable. He was heavily involved in combinations and linked up well with Olcay Şahan and Gökhan Töre in the final third. His ability to trick players around him and then drive through space is a joy to watch. Arda Turan’s technique and control stood out in moments where the opposing teams wanted to stay compact. His dribbling was effective when they left the midfield open. Czech Republic and Latvia concentrated on putting Arda off the ball in order to subdue Turkey’s spark.

3. The missing component
Without Ömer Toprak as a center-back option, Mehmet Topal was slot into that role. Due to Mehmet’s absence in midfield, Turkey were missing his defensive quality. They were lacking someone to close down the middle of the park and break up play. This is one reason both Czech Republic and Latvia were able to quickly execute dangerous counter-attacks. There wasn’t enough emphasis on defense with Turkey’s attack-minded set up.

4. Lack of “Plan B”
Turkey started with a spring in their step, but they faded as the game wore on. They weren’t able to keep up the intensity for 90 minutes. The chances were coming, but they just couldn’t capitalize. Turkey ran out of ideas and could not formulate a Plan B when things weren’t going their way. Once Czech Republic recognized Turkey’s strength in supplying numbers into the box, they crowded out that area. Latvia relied on low blocking to cut off Turkey’s chances in front of goal. When the team couldn’t adapt to these situations, it proved to be costly.

The European Qualifiers have been a challenging task full of surprises. Turkey will need to kick it up a notch with this being the first time they have failed to win their opening three games in qualifiers since 1992 (Opta). However, they have the personnel to make it happen. Once injured players are incorporated back into the squad, this could address some of the tactical issues. Turkey are facing an uphill battle, but it isn't impossible. Victory is sweeter when it’s hard fought.

Match Review: Sporting CP-Chelsea (UCL Group Stage)

Lineups

Sporting CP: R. Patrício, Cédric, Maurício, Sarr, J. Silva, J. Mário, William, Adrien, Carrillo, Slimani, Nani

Subs Used: Oliveira (63’), Capel (81’), Montero (81’)

Chelsea: Courtois, Ivanović, Cahill, Terry, Filipe Luís, Matić, Fàbregas, Schürrle, Oscar, Hazard, Diego Costa

Subs Used: Willian (58’), Mikel (71’), Salah (84’)

Analysis

Diego Costa’s work ethic was on display from the very beginning. His first chance in the game came at 3’ when he took advantage of Sporting’s high line and stretched central defense. He linked up well with Oscar and Ivanović who he had the most effective pass combinations with. Costa’s positioning was crucial in moments where Hazard and Schürrle were making intensive runs. He held up defenders, which freed up space near the box.
Rui Patrício’s goalkeeping heroics denied goal-scoring opportunities from Schürrle, Costa, and Oscar. Chelsea’s fluidity and interchange of players are tough to contain, especially on transitions. He showed excellent focus and composure against Chelsea’s dangerous attack force for the entire 90 minutes.
Nani was the focal point of Sporting’s attack. The aim was to get him on the ball as much as possible. In a 3 vs. 4 situation, Sporting did well to utilize passing lanes. Chelsea recognized this threat and tightened the defense. Chelsea’s organization cut off Sporting’s passing options in the box. This is why it was difficult to involve Slimani at times.
William Carvalho was instrumental in building Sporting’s attack and looking for the perfect pass when they regained possession. Since Nani was one of the most active players on the pitch, Carvalho prevented the work in attack from being predictable. He was essential in switching up the play.
The most influential player and the core of Chelsea’s midfield was Nemanja Matić. Not only did he contribute to the lone goal of the game, but he didn’t neglect his other duties. Matić used his athleticism to recover the most balls (10) and attempt the most blocks (2) out of all the players. He covered both sides of the pitch on occasions as well. Matić patrolled the midfield and pulled into the right side to support Ivanović vs. Nani.

Caner Erkin: Fenerbahçe's Powerhouse

At 5 feet 11 inches and 165 pounds, he stands as a pillar of strength. He’s a valuable piece of the puzzle. When you leave this piece out, the picture is left incomplete. As one of Fenerbahçe’s most in-form players, Caner Erkin’s 3 goals and 14 assists culminated a successful 2013/14 season for the Yellow Canaries.

Core Attributes: Commitment, Accuracy, Awareness, Pace

Caner is Fenerbahçe’s staple on the left. With his experience as a left-back and winger, he can single-handedly change the momentum of a game. He takes the responsibility of creating something out of nothing while adding urgency to Fenerbahçe’s style. Not only does he influence open play, but he also delivers on set pieces. He’s able to pinpoint players from crosses, corner kicks, and free kicks. This allows him to pick out Sow, Webó, or Emenike in the most dangerous areas.

The sign of a unique player is one who makes complex moves look natural and effortless. Caner Erkin’s vision and execution are needed in high pressure situations. When there are pockets of space, he dribbles past players with ease. Caner’s quick movements do not give opposing players the time to process what’s going on around them. His charging runs are key to beating his man in one-on-one situations or taking on two defenders. This ability to foresee events on the pitch and get into good positions are key factors of Fenerbahçe’s unpredictability in attack.

Chosen as Turkish Player of the Year, it’s no surprise Caner Erkin was approached by high-profile clubs in Europe. However, he sealed his fate with Fenerbahçe by signing a two-year contract extension until 2016. From an interview in 2010 he revealed,

“Fenerbahçe has a lot to give to me and I also have a lot to give to Fenerbahçe...despite being young I have a lot of confidence in myself” (Fenerbahçe Worldwide).

The İstanbul giants have big aspirations and Caner Erkin is doing everything he can to meet them.

Lars Stindl: The Face of Hannover 96

In the 2014-15 season of the Bundesliga, Hannover 96 will have the youngest squad in the league with an average age of 23.8 years (Transfermarkt). As captain of Die Roten, Lars Stindl has what it takes to steer his team to a successful season.

Via Spox
Core Attributes: Leadership, Versatility, Dynamism, Stamina

First and foremost, he possesses calmness and composure on the pitch. By taking the leadership role, he sets an example with his work ethic and professionalism. He has been at the club since 2010, so his experience is key going into the new campaign.

As a right-footed player, he can play on the right, center, or deeper in midfield. Also, he can showcase his creative side when playing behind the striker. Since Tayfun Korkut switched Stindl to the attacking midfield on Matchday 30, this positively affected the team dynamic. Hannover were unbeaten in 5 consecutive games, which was the most for them in the 2013-2014 Bundesliga season. Stindl will most likely feature as the play-maker in future games after switching to the #10 shirt.

Via Spox
The amount of responsibilities Lars Stindl takes on is vital for H96 and it's noticeable when he isn't playing. According to statistics provided by WhoScored from the previous season, 42% of Hannover’s overall attack came from the right side and 43% of the action zone was in the middle third. Stindl knows how to make use of space when racing down the flank or roaming around the opponent’s box. Not only that, his mobility is important in transitions and connecting the attack and defense. This shows how involved he is in the production of goal-scoring opportunities.

As the face of Hannover, Lars Stindl can be the spark that brings success to Lower Saxony. He makes his presence felt on the pitch, is ready to play wherever the manager needs him, and sets the bar with his commitment level. Stindl's flexibility in different roles will serve as an advantage for The Reds throughout the season. A quality player who fights for the shirt week in and week out is an asset for any team.

Top 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Love David Luiz (Brazil vs. Colombia Edition)

A year ago, I wrote a piece explaining the 'Top 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Love David Luiz'. I'm back now to tell you why you should love him even more (if that's possible). After Brazil's 2-1 win against Colombia, people began to notice how much of a great guy Luiz truly is. His qualities make him a wonderful role model on and off the pitch.

Sit back and enjoy this post. (To read the original click here.)

1. David Luiz has a lot of passion for Brazil.
David Luiz is one of the most passionate players that you will ever come across in this World Cup. Expect him to belt out Brazil's national anthem prior to kick-off and try to pump up the crowd during the game. He feeds off of the atmosphere from the stands and will always give his 100 percent.

Storytime: Back in his Benfica days, Luiz had the option to represent Portugal instead of Brazil. He kindly declined the offer since Brazil was his only choice.

This is a video of the Brazilians singing their national anthem prior to their match against Croatia. Notice the amount of heart these players put into this. Especially Luiz.

2. That goal.
Luiz's unique technique has us wondering how he does it. This free kick is far from ordinary. You probably have already seen this goal multiple times. Yes, multiple times.

3. That celebration.
BEAST MODE! This is Luiz's second goal in this competition.

4. David Luiz embodies true sportsmanship.
After Colombia's loss against Brazil, James Rodriguez was completely devestated. Realizing this, David Luiz came over to the Colombian to comfort him. Luiz urged the crowd to applaud the player as a sign of respect. Afterwards, both players gave each other hugs and swapped jerseys. This is an example of great sportsmanship.

5.  Man of the Match
David Luiz was deemed MOTM in this game.

Congrats Geezer!

The Perception of Playing Styles in Football

Football is an art form. I don’t only see 22 players on the pitch. I see a master diligently creating his painting. Each step is a brushstroke. Every touch on the ball is a production. The beauty lies in the fact we have our own unique interpretations. A perfect mold doesn’t exist neither in life nor in football.

People see it as black or white. It’s either attractive or anti- football. A pretty or an ugly win. We may have our preferences on what we consider to be aesthetically pleasing, but that does not mean we cannot appreciate or respect different playing styles. When you take away the labels and stereotypes, we are fully able to understand the role of football. It’s not about right or wrong, but our own perception of the game is beautiful no matter what.

Based on popular opinion, people respond positively to teams who are not afraid to attack. Let’s consider teams at the World Cup in the Group Stage. For example, France play a creative, free-flowing style which heavily relies on the technical abilities of the players. Les Bleus rank high on shots attempted and boast one goal every 34 minutes.

In addition, the Netherlands implement a fast counter-attacking style by applying pressure and getting every player involved to break down the rival. This is how they scored an impressive 10 goals from open play, which translates into one goal every 27 minutes from 4.1 attempts. Both are considerably higher than the average of 62 minutes from 9 attempts.

Germany incorporate a direct style of football, while maintaining possession. Like a well-built machine, they utilize efficiency to get the result. They calculated the most short passes per game with a total pass completion rate of 85%. They are quick on transitions and players are able to adapt within the system.

On the other end of the spectrum, both Iran and Greece exhibited a more conservative approach. Iran placed emphasis on keeping the defense tight and using their opportunities on breakaways as their means to score. This defensive style of play was not appreciated by many because it did not add the “entertainment factor” or most saw it as a way of not playing football but merely playing for a draw. With a group consisting of Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Nigeria, it was always going to be a difficult task to advance to the next round. They stifled Nigeria who have one of the most dangerous and unpredictable attacking force in the competition. They almost got a result against Argentina, but a last-minute strike by Messi changed the outcome. To battle against waves of oncoming attacks and remain steadfast against pressure requires immense concentration.

Similarly, Greece have a footballing style they stay committed to. It is admirable because they always seem to find a way. To get as far as they did by relying on their strategy is a huge achievement. The most notable facet of this Greek side is their sheer strength in numbers to challenge the opposition. Greece don’t have the most refined players, but they collectively work together to make the defense impenetrable. The focus on organization is a key part of their game plan.

I see nothing wrong with a defensive style of play. In every high stakes game at the World Cup, it’s about taking the best result and running with it. Certain teams have limitations, so they have to maximize the chances they do have. Tactically, they have to be on their game because there’s less room for error. It requires just as much attention to detail executing a defensive plan as it does an offensive one.

When I see a certain team play a distinct style of football, I don’t feel the need to write it off. There is a reason behind it and it enables me learn to learn more about their philosophy.
As a student of the game, I believe it’s important to be open-minded. We are the ones who created barriers and we are the ones who can break them down.

#CONCACAFed: Mexico Edition

Mexico: Group A (Group with Brazil)
CONCACAF’ed: Cameroon and Croatia
Draw: Brazil
Loss: None

Mexico were the team that struggled to qualify for the World Cup. Having won only two of their last ten matches in the World Cup Qualifiers, people were convinced this nation would not survive Group A. The team’s instability prior to this competition hasn’t affected players, however. El Tri have advanced to the Round of 16! Can you believe it?

With a goal drought from Chicharito, this made people even more doubtful of Mexico. When you think of this National Team, the first person who comes to mind is Chicharito. He’s the face of Mexico for international viewers. Chicharito has recently been excluded from the team’s starting XI on several occasions.Thankfully, the player ended his goal drought by scoring in the 82’ minute against Croatia. Will things finally turn around for the forward?

Mexico’s game against Cameroon was very tight. Having the linesman disallow two of Mexico’s goals made it a frustrating game. In the end, Mexico fought hard to secure a 1-0 win. CONCACAF’ed.

One player who stands out to World Cup viewers is Mexico’s goalkeeper, Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa. He has showcased some incredible saves, especially in El Tri’s game against Brazil. Everyone was surprised how well Mexico had performed in this match. Prior to kickoff, many were convinced Brazil would defeat Mexico at ease. This was not the case, however. This match ended in a exhilarating 0-0 draw. One may argue that their result against Brazil was not desirable, however, we can all agree that a draw is much more satisfying than a loss to either side.

Mexico knew facing Croatia would not be an easy thing to do. This nation was deemed as the Dark Horse of their group. Croatia gave a hard time to Brazil (despite their loss) and Cameroon. You would be foolish to undermine Croatia’s squad depth and talent. Mexico had to go into this match fully prepared. Surprisingly, El Tri managed to beat Croatia 3-1! CONCACAF’ed.

Gracias San Zusi.

#CONCACAFed: USA Edition

USA: Group G (Group of Death)
CONCACAF’ed: Ghana
Draw: Portugal
Loss: None

Going into this competition, many people have undermined the United States. The USMNT are viewed as inexperienced and are not considered a real threat in their group. From their last two games, most individuals have realized the potential Klinsmann’s men possess. These players may be a little rough around the edges but they have not made it easy for Ghana and Portugal.

The United States’ match against Ghana was a crucial win. Mentally, the outcome of this game would impact the players’ future performances. It was not the most pretty win but it  was significant for USMNT supporters. Ghana was the nation  that knocked the US out of the 2010 World Cup. It was more than just a win. It was redemption. CONCACAF’ed.

The result of the USA-Portugal game should not take away from our players’ admirable display on the field. Even though the US were down one goal, they were persistent and eventually scored two crucial goals. Klinsmann’s ability to make effective substitutions is also worth noting. Portugal’s goal within the last minute was extremely lucky. They were that close from being CONCACAF’ed.

Germany, we’ll be waiting for you.

#USAvGHA More Than Just A Game: My Reaction

Monday morning. Bullets of rain are pounding on the pavement. There is a certain gloominess lingering around that I can’t shake off. I’m not superstitious by any means, but I’m searching for a sign of good luck. Something that will tell me it will be okay.

I was most anticipating World Cup Day 5. To those who are not supporters of the USMNT may not understand the string of emotions attached to this match. Ghana had knocked out the Americans in the last two World Cups. Needless to say, we waited four years to close an old chapter. In one word: redemption.

Clint Dempsey’s goal after 29 seconds broke the mental barrier. It eased our nerves. Whatever happens we weren’t going down without a fight. USA may not be the most technical or skillful team, but their best quality is playing with their hearts out no matter the circumstances. The opposition could sense this fighting spirit and they weren’t going to make it easy for us. USA had suffered setbacks with Jozy Altidore and Matt Besler’s hamstring injuries and Clint Dempsey’s broken nose. Ghana were countlessly bombarding the left flank, USA were exhausted due to the humidity, and Ayew’s equalizer was inevitable. Through all of this we managed to pull off a miracle with John Brooks’ game-winning header assisted by Graham Zusi who were both second-half substitutions.

Although there are those who will argue that USA didn’t deserve to win and Ghana were far superior in terms of play, this shouldn’t take away from what the US have accomplished. From Day 1 of taking the reigns of U.S. Soccer, Jürgen Klinsmann has emphasized the need to adapt to uncomfortable situations. When the defense was continuously being tested, the team collectively worked together to confront it. Besler and Jermaine Jones supported DaMarcus Beasley from oncoming threats, Kyle Beckerman put his body on the line, and USA remained organized while absorbing tremendous pressure. Jones was often criticized for being rash, Beckerman’s work-rate would go unnoticed, and Brooks was considered too inexperienced. Throughout the course of Klinsmann’s tenure, people were often skeptical of his methods. They were quick to point out the flaws in his decision-making, but in reality Jürgen’s thought process hasn’t failed us yet. Not only is this indicative of our progress, but it is a true testament to the team chemistry USMNT are building for the future. They faced adversity and came out on top.

Winning one game against Ghana doesn’t mean we are anywhere close to Portugal or Germany. However, this one game holds much more significance. We have faith. We have an increase in morale. We have come this far. Emerging out of the Group of Death alive would exceed my expectations.

The rain had finally stopped. Smoky, black clouds wisped around the sky, but I could finally see the blue peek through.

"We have a great spirit and fight until the last minute. It was a grind but it was a wonderful one at the end of the day.” - Jürgen Klinsmann

Real Madrid’s Away Kit: Real Men Wear Pink

Today, Real Madrid released their new home and away kits for next season. What had many people talking was their away kit.

Everyone has a say, regardless if he or she is a fan of Real Madrid. Most male supporters do not like the concept of this kit. The fact that it's pink is a major turnoff. Why would we want our players to wear pink? What does pink have to do with Real Madrid? Who would buy these pink kits?

One may argue that it's a reminiscence of last season's second and third away kits. Bright colors such as sky blue, orange, and magenta is too loud. Although these colors give a modern edge, most supporters prefer classic colors that are more subtle.

From a marketing perspective, I believe Real Madrid took a positive step by releasing a pink kit. I appreciate that the club took a risk and chose to reach out to a different target audience. It is obvious that this kit’s aim was to attract the attention of Real Madrid’s female demographic. Perhaps I’m inclined to this “marketing ploy” since I’m a part of the small minority of female football supporters who seem to go unnoticed.

The idea of a magenta colored jersey appeals to women, regardless if they are a football supporter or not. What I like about this jersey is that it goes against the norm and makes a statement. Overall, the response from females was very positive.

At the end of the day, the jersey plays no importance. It's all about the love for the crest.

Besides, I look forward to seeing Ronaldo in pink. #RealMenWearPink

Hala Madrid.
